Ah! My Goddess

Summary

The manga tells the story of college freshman Keiichi Morisato, who, because of his pure
heart, has been chosen by Yggdrasil, Heaven's computer system, to receive a single wish.
The "angelic" goddess Belldandy is sent down to Earth to ask for his wish, and tells him that
he can potentially wish for anything that he wants, from becoming a billionaire to destroying
the world in an instant. Keiichi thinks that this entire meeting is a prank set up by his
senpais. Keiichi, thinking the entire set up is a joke, wishes Belldandy to stay with him
forever, under the condition that the offer is valid. Ironically, he does not fully comprehend
the outcome of his wish, and is stunned on realizing that Belldandy will now be living with
him. The manga/anime follows their relationship as they become closer to each other.

The varying anime series feature the main characters and are based on the same basic
plotline as the original manga, but each has taken a unique interpretation on this concept
— described below — and, as such, should be considered separate canons. The only
exception to this is the more recent TV series, which follows the plot of the manga closely.

Being a mechanical otaku[1] himself, Fujishima frequently bases whole chapters, or even
story arcs, around mechanics, focusing especially on motorcycle mechanics. Most notably,
readers discover that Keiichi Morisato is a member of his college's motor vehicle club,
which is always under threat of being put out of commission by a rival motor club. There are
also several story arcs related to racing found earlier in the manga; the concept of racing is
also a significant plot device in each of the anime canons. Both Keiichi and Belldandy are
exceptionally gifted at racing (Keiichi because of natural ability and Belldandy because of
her ability to "talk" with the machines). Most of the other main characters have exhibited
some degree of skill in racing and/or mechanics, making the idea of mechanics a significant
device for character development and growth.

Keiichi

It's so cute how much he cares about Belldandy. Even though it's a humor series, they're a
cute couple. Funny how embarrassed he gets.

Keiichi was student of the Nekomi Institute of Technology and a member of the NIT Motor
Club. Keiichi is portrayed as a typical college student with a notable lack of experience with
women.[1] One day Keiichi accidentally dialed the Goddess Relief Office. Before he could
begin to comprehend what on earth was going on, the beautiful Goddess Belldandy warped
into Keiichi's dorm to grant him a wish. Convinced his sempais (older classmates) are
playing a prank on him as he has no luck with girls, Keiichi wishes for a girl like Belldandy to
be by his side forever. Much to his surprise his wish is granted. Ever since, the two have
been together. Belldandy's presence attracted a lot of attention not just in the mortal realm.
Even though he may seem indecisive and very shy, when it comes to love he is very
reliable.

He is a very skilled mechanic and an exceptional race driver. His abilities are somewhat
glossed over in the OVA series, but are displayed to great effect in the movie. In the manga,
he is bestowed the directorship of the Motor Club, which he subsequently passes on to
Sora Hasegawa. At his supposed graduating from college (ch 78, he was one class shy), he
started working at the repair shop Whirlwind owned by the founder of the NIT Motor Club:
Chihiro Fujimi. He picked up the one class and actually graduated many chapters later.

Keiichi has a sister, Megumi Morisato. As revealed in vol. 23 of the manga, he and his family
are originally from the Kushiro prefecture in northeastern Hokkaidō (the northern island of
Japan). His father Keima is a glassblower with a natural gift for motorcycle maintenance (as
well as a fear of being touched by women). His mother Takano is an avid mah-jong player.

Belldandy

If it wasn't for her naive trait, I'd call her cliche. She's too damn perfect. Even if she is a
supernatural being- come on, a girl who's gorgeous, talented, AND that good natured??

Belldandy is introduced to the series when Keiichi Morisato, portrayed as a typical college
student with a notable lack of experience with women,[2] accidentally dials the "Goddess
Relief Agency" when attempting to order take-away noodles[1] (the reason is simply
explained as fate in the manga and anime adaptations). Belldandy appears before Keiichi
and offers to grant him a wish. Convinced that the whole incident is a prank played on him
by his seniors (Senpais), Keiichi half-jokingly wishes her to stay with him forever. ("I want a
goddess like you to be by my side forever"). The wish, of course, is granted[1] - thus
providing one of the key premises of the series.

With Belldandy and Keiichi now portrayed as a couple, Fujishima introduces other factors:
specifically the complications caused by family and friends.[4] Forced to leave his dorm, (as
women aren't permitted to stay on the premises),[5] Keiichi and Belldandy end up living at
the Tariki Hongan Temple in the city of Nekomi, Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo. Within both
the manga and the anime, the Temple was turned over to them by its former guardian,
Koshian, a Buddhist monk who was overwhelmed by the purity of Belldandy's spirit and her
unparalleled skills in polishing the Temple altar, in cooking, and in Zazen meditation.
Koshian departs the series by leaving for a pilgrimage to find spiritual perfection, (although
he does briefly return later in the series), turning over the temple to Belldandy and
Keiichi's care, without realizing Belldandy's true nature as a Goddess. Later, Fujishima has
Belldandy's two sisters (Urd and Skuld) join Belldandy and Keiichi in the temple.

Although Belldandy was sent to grant him a wish and nothing more, Belldandy expresses
many times that she has enjoyed her time with Keiichi and that her purpose is to make him
happy. The contract really is an excuse for her to stay since in Episode 8 Season 1 "Ah! A
Devil Comes and Bestows Misfortune", her rival Marller, a first class demon, has stated that
"she can cancel a contract with a human anytime". Belldandy had then stated that she did
not want to, because Keiichi was a special person in her heart. The first time Keiichi and
Belldandy met, Belldandy expressed great affection towards the fact that he repairs and
takes care of old electronic items that others do not, along with many other reasons in his
personality Belldandy has grown an attraction towards him.

Urd

The bad bitch right here! She's bold, flamboyant, sexy, outgoing and doesn't take shit from
anyone. She's the shit and she knows it. Though she's real rude and inconsiderate, and
sometimes doesn't think things through.

Urd is Belldandy's older half sister and is the second Goddess to appear to Keiichi. Urd
ranks as Goddess second class, management category limited license, similar to her
youngest sister Skuld. She is the Yggdrasil System Administrator and Manager.

Although her powers exceed those of her sisters, she was supposedly relegated to second
class ranking due to her tendency to lie, said Belldandy early in the manga. Later, the real
reason that she dropped the first class license examination was revealed to be because
she was asked why she wanted to be a first class goddess. She only wanted power to
protect her sisters, not power to protect all beings (as a first class goddess would do). Urd
has extensive knowledge of potion lore. Urd recharges her energy by drinking sake and
travels via television screens. She bears the emblem of the past. If allowed to wield her full
first class power unsealed, Urd could possibly be the most powerful of the Goddesses on
Earth. Her power is such that even just touching Peorth (a first class Goddess) caused
bruising on the latter.

Urd fancies herself a Goddess of Love, although the mishaps of using her magical potions
and her general lack of restraint tends to complicate, rather than stimulate, Keiichi and
Belldandy's love life. She came to Earth to spur Keiichi onward with love potions and well-
meaning, but deceitful advice, but as punishment for deserting her post and for using her
powers on Earth without authorization, The Almighty banished her from Heaven until further
notice. That notice came after the Terrible Master Urd episode c. chapter 47, but by then
she wanted to stay on Earth and everyone helped muck up things so she couldn't go back
right away. She and Skuld have since done emergency duty on Yggdrasil in heaven at least
twice since then, as of ch 162.

As she demonstrates in the manga, she can exercise immense control over her powers
despite her second-class status. She was able to draw her personal sigil using first-class
lightning magic on her first attempt, a task that required First Class Goddess Peorth
numerous attempts to successfully complete.

Urd shares a common father with her younger sisters (Belldandy, Skuld), but has a different
mother, the Demon Lord Hild. Because of this, Urd is a hybrid of Goddess and Demon,
reflected in the half-white, half-black appearance of her Angel, World of Elegance. Perhaps
due to her Demonic heritage, Austrian Polka (in the English manga) or Enka (in the
Japanese manga and TV series) instantly puts Urd to sleep and she is unable to awaken
until the music ceases.

Keiichi's friends and his sister Megumi are aware of Urd's existence and her relationship
with Belldandy and residency at Keiichi's home; however, for the most part they are not
aware of her "goddess" status.

For the longest time, she was unable to summon her angel since she was so scared when
she first saw it and ordered it never to come out. This was caused by her self-doubt at
being a hybrid Goddess/Demon since she equated having pure white wings as the sign of
being a true Goddess. She has since gotten over whatever self-doubt that was holding her
back and can now once again call her angel at will, much to Skuld's chagrin (she had
originally thought that Urd had no angel and wanted to top her eldest sister by being first).

Unlike her younger sister Belldandy, Urd is very impulsive and headstrong. Belldandy
describes Urd as being very passionate about everything she does. Urd is a great believer
in the idea that the 'End justifies the Means', although, as Belldandy puts it: "...she gets so
wrapped up in the means that she forgets what the end was."

Skuld

She's real smart and so young. But she's outspoken and if she has a problem she'll say it.
Go girl.

Skuld is the younger sister of Belldandy (who she refers to as Onee-sama, lit. "Big sis" in
the English anime) and is the third Goddess to appear to Keiichi Morisato. Skuld has a
Goddess second class, type one, limited license, a category similar to her eldest sister Urd.
Her true age is unknown, but her appearance is that of a girl in her early teens.

Skuld is one of Yggdrasil's system debuggers. She compensates for her lack of magic
power with her innate talent for invention which is known throughout Heaven. Skuld
recharges her energy by consuming ice cream and travels via warm or hot water. (Ironically,
she can't swim.) She bears the emblem of the future.

Skuld is an engineering genius, capable of building just about anything out of the most
mundane parts under most limited resources. Sample gadgets have included: explosives, a
neutrino detector, glasses that allow user to see invisible "computer bugs," and even a
device for removing a miniature black hole from Keiichi's body. Banpei-kun RX and the
converted mannequin Sigel are "living" proof of her talent. She can compute equations and
redesign even the most complex engineering blueprints in no time. All too frequently,
though, she forgets to include instructions with her devices, which can create havoc if
someone unsuspecting of their true power (such as Keiichi) interferes with them. Other
times, she will concentrate too much on one aspect of a device (usually power) and forgets
to compensate by boosting other aspects of the same device, making many of her
inventions rather unstable.

In the manga, she has been gradually developing the ability to do magic. For a long time
one of her only magic skills was the ability to imprint words (usually insults) on the surface
of her targets, a power she often used when expressing frustration with Urd and Keiichi.

She travels to Earth after Belldandy's proximity to Keiichi started creating an increasing
number of bugs in Heaven's supercomputer Yggdrasil. At least that was her official excuse,
as she believed Belldandy was living with Keiichi against her will. She tried to convince
Belldandy to return to Heaven to resolve the bug problem and at the same time with the
ulterior motive of alleviating her loneliness. After realizing that Belldandy's relationship
with Keiichi was not going to end any time soon, Skuld decides to stay on Earth and act as
Belldandy's unofficial chaperone.

Skuld regularly clashes with her sister Urd, particularly when it comes to Belldandy's
relationship with Keiichi. However, the two sisters do love each other and will work
together to solve a problem or stave off a mutual threat.

In the manga, Skuld's engineering skills made her a minor celebrity around the Nekomi Tech
campus, especially when she engaged in a "Robot Wars" competition with Keiichi's sister
Megumi Morisato. Keiichi's friends are aware of Skuld's existence and of her living with
Keiichi and Belldandy; however, they do not know of her "goddess" status.

Unlike Belldandy and Urd, Skuld did not possess an angel when she was first introduced.
Later on in the manga when one of her gadgets went out of control Urd used her angel to
save Skuld. Then, she gave Skuld the angels egg leading to the birth of Noble Scarlet.
Because of Skuld's lack of magic power, Noble Scarlet lacked the unequivocal obedience
an angel must have for her goddess. After interfering with Skuld's budding relationship
with Sentaro, Urd turned her back to egg form with the promise that they'll meet again when
Skuld has gained enough power. In the meanwhile, Skuld wore the angel egg mounted on a
necklace. Later on the promise is fulfilled when Skuld calls forth Noble Scarlet in the fight
against the Angel Eater. At this time, Skuld had gained the necessary power to control the
angel and the only thing lacking was the desire to truly be with her.
