Death Note Summary Light Yagami is an extremely intelligent young man who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change in the year 2003, when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground. The Death Note's instructions claim that if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the notebook's authenticity, but after experimenting with it, Light realizes that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the New World" by passing his judgment on those he deems to be evil or who get in his way. Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira" (キラ, "Kira"? derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the word "killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a game of psychological cat and mouse between the two begins. Light Yagami I respect his dream-just don't agree with his method. Yes, being around negative people influences other people to be negative. But Light...has he ever gotten to know any of the people he has killed? Do you know why they did it? Do you even know whether the news was telling the truth or if they'd been falsely accused and convicted? Sometimes we are faced under certain circumstances where it is inevitable we do something wrong. And light, look at yourself, what are you doing right now? You may justify it as "oh I'm killing criminals it's for the good of the world these people need to die" but that's the SAME DAMN THING the murderers that YOU killed are thinking. And what about the good side of those people? Light, no one is 100% evil, no one is 100% good. No matter what your definition of good and evil are. But...I don't know, maybe you were partially right...maybe it was the only way. But that's why I love this story. And Light is a goddamn genius-clever as shit. But it was inevitable that you lost and got killed. Did anyone else notice his last name Yagami spelled backwards is I'm-a-Gay??? I'm immature so that's hilarious to me. Ohba described Light's life as "ruined" once he obtained the Death Note, and that Light became a victim of the Death Note "in many ways," Ohba described Light as bearing good faith intentions and having a "very conceited" nature.[2] Ohba also describes Light as having a "warped" "desire to be godlike," bearing love for his family, and intending to transform the world into "a better place."[5] Death Note: How to Read 13 also states that Light, "uncompromising" when achieving his ideals, "sullied" himself by using the Death Note and that his actions "may have been the result of the purity within him" prior to obtaining the Death Note.[6] Douglas Wolk of Salon describes Light as "coldly manipulative," "egomaniacal," and "an unrepentant serial killer, a butcher on an enormous scale" who is not "a Freddy Krueger, a monster who represents pure evil, or a Patrick Bateman, a demonic symbol of his age." Wolk describes Light as genuinely believing that he has "the moral high ground."[7] Light constantly tries to evade the suspicion of L while both maintaining his identity as Kira (derivation of kirā (キラー, kirā?), the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "killer"), and cleansing the world of crime. The fact that he is a genius also adds to his notion that only he is fit to judge humanity and steer it on a proper moral course. James Brusuelas of Animation World Magazine uses "altruistically" as an adjective to describe Light's quest to rid humanity of its criminals.[8] Travis Fickett of IGN describes Light as a "sociopath."[9] Tom S. Pepirium of IGN describes Light as "brilliant, but disturbed."[10] Light, born on February 28, 1986[1], is a third year high school student (12th Grade) at Daikoku Private Academy (大国学園, Daikoku Gakuen?) [11] who also attends supplemental classes at Gamou Prep Academy [12] in the beginning of the story. Light has a father, Soichiro Yagami, who is a member of the investigation team opposing Kira. In addition, Light has a mother, Sachiko Yagami, and a younger sister, Sayu Yagami. In Spring 2004 Light becomes a first-year student (freshman) at To-Oh University (東応大 学, Tōō Daigaku?), [13] becoming one of two freshman representatives; L is the other freshman representative.[14] During a tennis game with L at To-Oh, spectators reveal that Light was the junior high school tennis champion in 1999 and 2000; After his 2000 victory, Light quit tennis as he entered high school.[15] According to Ohba, Light sees Misa Amane, who he uses as an accomplice, as a "bad person" who killed people, so he acts emotionally cold towards her and manipulates her. [5] When L is finally able to corner him, Light puts his master plan in practice. He temporarily gives up his Death Note to Ryuk, erasing his memories about his time as Kira from his mind. Rem, under instruction by Light to give it to someone who would use it selfishly, gives it to Kyosuke Higuchi of the Yotsuba Corporation. Now unaware of the fact that he was the original Kira, Light accepts L's offer to join the investigation team to hunt down Higuchi, known as the third Kira. Light requests the alias Light Asahi (朝日 月, Asahi Raito?) to be used for him. When he is finally captured, Light touches his Death Note, thereby regaining his memory of when he was the original Kira. He then proceeds exactly as planned, masterfully killing Higuchi by using the Death Note paper he put in his watch before he lost his memories; and manipulating Rem, who also dies in the process, to kill both Watari and L. Light is later nominated by L's investigation team (who are unaware that he is Kira) to act as L, due to the fact that they cannot reveal the death of the real L to the world. Light also takes over the role of L's assistant, Watari. Now able to act as both Kira and L, Light can continue killing criminals while leading the investigation team in circles.[6] His secret identity as L is soon discovered by the Special Provisions for Kira, President David Hoope, and Mello's gang. Light joins the Japanese Police Force's Intelligence Department in April 2009, believing that no one can stop his plans. Near and Mello eventually appear before him, trying to accomplish what L could not: to expose Kira's true identity, and bring him to justice. At this point, according to How to Read 13, Light becomes "overtaken with evil" and possessing "arrogance that came with Kira's power"; Light loses sight of his former self. Ryuk is looking at Light with the Shinigami Eyes, revealing Light's real name and remaining lifespan (in Shinigami time).Wolk describes Light's ideal world, a "totalitarian" place "ruled by a propagandistic TV channel and an arbitrary secret executioner." Wolk said that Ohba sometimes suggests that the world is "in some ways a better, happier world than ours."[7] In the end, the combined efforts of Mello and Near, combined with a large miscalculation and miscommunication on the part of Mikami and Light, force Light to reveal himself as Kira. In the final clash between Near and Light at a warehouse, all is revealed and the Kira case comes to an end after six long years. In the manga version, after completely losing his head and characteristic cool over the prospect of being arrested, and in complete desperation after his attempts to write Near's name down are thwarted by Touta Matsuda, Light begs Ryuk to help him. Ryuk reminds Light that he is on neither side, and fulfills his earlier promise to write Light's name in his Death Note, thus ending Light's life. In the anime version, Light manages to flee the warehouse after Mikami commits suicide. Near instructs the team that there is no reason to pursue Light given that there should be no more hidden Death Notes, and Light's wounds would prevent him from getting far. Despite this, Shuichi Aizawa, Kanzo Mogi, Hideki Ide and Matsuda follow Light but are unable to find him before he dies on the staircase of a nearby warehouse due to cardiac arrest from Ryuk writing his name in his Death Note. As Light slowly closes his eyes, an apparition of L appears before Light, mirroring Light standing over L in episode 25 at L's death. According to the manga, Light's date of death is January 28, 2010.[1] His height and weight are 179 centimeters[16] (5 feet and 10 inches[1]) and 54 kilograms[16] (119 pounds[1]), respectively. His blood type is A (see Japanese blood type theory of personality).[1] In Death Note: How to Read 13 Ohba said that Light was "a young man who could understand the pain of others" when he first encountered the Death Note. Ohba said that if Ryuk never developed an interest in the human world, Light would have become "one of the greatest police leaders in the world" who, with L, worked against criminals. [17] Ohba added that he believed that debating whether Light's actions were good or evil is not "very important." Ohba says that he personally sees Light as a "very evil" character.[18] Obata said that Light was his second favorite human character and that he was not sure whether that was because he "liked" Light or because he drew "such an evil character" in a magazine for children.[19] L/Ryuzaki Another clever bastard. also very interesting and well developed...I just wish the books would have said more about his background. I'm surprised he's not diabetic, looking at how much sugar he consumes. And the way he sits does not "help him think", at least I don't think so, cause I USED TO SIT LIKE THAT! He needs to get some sunlight, go outside, take a shower or at least brush his hair, and get some sleep. Start wearing shoes, you nasty bitch. Try talking to someone besides Watari. IT'S NOT THAT BAD! Sad that he lost though, and when he died Light was staring at him with a wicked grin like "hahahaha I killed you you lost". By the way we spend the whole time wondering what his real name is-turns out his real first name is L. Full name L Lawliet. Wow.... L, who also uses the aliases Hideki Ryuga (流河 旱樹, Ryūga Hideki?), Ryuzaki (竜崎, Ryūzaki?), Eraldo Coil (エラルド=コイル, Erarudo-Koiru?), and Deneuve (ドヌーヴ, Donūvu?), the latter two for which he has developed reputations as the second- and third-best detectives in the world, is quite secretive and only communicates with the world through his assistant Watari. He never shows his face to the world, instead representing himself with a capital L in Old English Five. After meeting the Kira investigation team, he requests that the task force refer to him as Ryuzaki for discretion. The Kira investigation team never learns his true name. Ohba said that L is the smartest character in the manga because "the plot requires it."[9] Ohba also said that he personally views L as "slightly evil."[10] When asked about L's nationality, Ohba responded saying "I think of him as a quarter Japanese, a quarter English, a quarter Russian and... maybe a quarter French or Italian? Something like that."[3] Tom S. Peperium of IGN described L's voice in the English anime version as "low monotone, while inspired by the original Japanese actor, sounds like a man deep in thought, a master detective on the hunt.." [11] L's disheveled and languid appearance masks his great powers of deduction and insight. He tends to second-guess everything he is presented with, and is extremely meticulous and analytical. He has several quirks such as preferring to crouch rather than sit, eating only sweet foods like desserts and fruits, and holding items very delicately. L stayed in England for five years, and during that time he was the champion in tennis for the England Junior Cup. L also secretly assumes the identities of the world's second and third best detectives, (Eraldo Coil and Deneuve respectively). L suspects early in the investigation that Light Yagami is Kira, but can not obtain any concrete evidence. In several situations, Light's seems to be proven innocent by the circumstances, but L remains skeptical. If Light were Kira, the case would be solved, and L has trouble letting go of this simple and complete solution. L can easily present his conclusions publicly at any time, and with his reputation, is taken seriously. Because of his initial suspicions of Light, L decides to join To-Oh University, the university that Light attends, using the name of Hideki Ryuga for investigative purposes. L attends To-Oh because he feels confidence in his reasoning skills and wishes to test them. He also intends to tell Light that he can "take the offensive." L understands that his act is dangerous and since he understands Light's thought process he feels confident that Light will not kill him at that point.[12] After L introduces himself as Ryuga, Light does not attempt to kill him since the name is conspicuously fake. Also, he has no way to know at the time whether the person is the real L or a proxy acting under orders. Light also reasons that L would have already introduced himself to Light's father earlier, and thus that if he somehow killed L, he would be easily uncovered as Kira. Light also fears that if he writes Hideki Ryuga into the Death Note, that the face of the pop singer from which the alias was derived would enter Light's head, and Hideki Ryuga would die by accident, which would lead L to the obvious conclusion that Light is Kira. Whenever L gives percentages to indicate how much he suspects a person of committing a crime, such as "five percent," in reality he means over 90 percent; when L gives Light a low percentage indicating how much he suspects Light in reality L is "pretty certain" that Light is Kira. Ohba said about L, "The truth is, he's a liar. [laughs]" In Chapter 58, Light tricks Rem into killing L for his own personal gain, making her believe that she must kill him for the sake of Misa's life. L's last sight before death is Light triumphantly smiling over his defeated rival, and in his last moment L confirms to himself that Light is the first Kira. Death Note: How To Read 13 revealed many facts about L. His true birth name is L Lawliet. His date of birth is Halloween of 1979, making him 25 when he dies on November 5, 2004.[1] His height and weight are estimated to be 179 centimeters and 50 kilograms [13] (5 feet and 10 inches and 110 pounds[1]). His blood type is "unknown."[1] It is implied that L was a former resident of Wammy's House, one of Watari's orphanages, as well as a safe haven and educational facility specifically for intellectually-gifted children. Therefore, similar to Near and Mello, L's abilities were discovered while living there, and he is most likely an orphan. In chapter 38 of the manga, L suggests that even though he eats only sweet foods, he remains underweight because the brain uses the most calories of any organ in the body. He also says that if he sits normally, his reasoning ability would drop 40%.[14] In episode 25 of the anime, Light and L talk to each other for one last time on the roof of the investigation building, and later inside of building. In this scene, L reveals to Light that their time together is almost over, also L seems a bit depressed, mostly because he, somehow, knew that his death was drawing near. L is killed by Rem shortly afterwards. This scene was not in the original manga. In the anime's finale, an apparition of L appears before the dying Light, who closes his eyes in the same fashion L does in the 25th episode. Misa Amane Ironically, people think Misa was so "pure" and "innocent", but i think she's even more fucked up than Light. Think-Light was killing to achieve his definition of a better world. But Misa was killing blindly, to WIN LIGHT'S AFFECTION. She didn't even think about it, she'd just go and kill anyone Light told her to kill, and to me that's worse than what Light was doing. And on top of that, she's so fucking retarted! Anyone with half a brain could tell Light didn't like her back and he was only using her for her eyes-he planned on killing her off once he was done with her. But I don't think Misa would have cared even if she knew that...she was just so obsessed with him... Misa is a famous model, singer and actress and has an immense crush on Light Yagami. She usually refers to herself in the third person by calling herself "Misa-Misa" to be cute and tends to be hyperactive. Douglas Wolk of Salon describes Misa as being drawn in a "Japanese comics' tradition of cute, tiny, airhead girls with big eyes" and being " lot cannier than she pretends to be." Wolk adds that the reader could "watch her measuring how much quasi-innocent charm to pour on in every situation."[8] She decides to devote her life to Light because he punished the criminal that killed her parents when she was younger; a burglar killed Misa's parents in front of her eyes. Misa, unable to forgive the killer and wanting to kill the burglar herself, saw multiple delays in the killer's trial before Kira killed him.[9] According to Ohba, Light sees Misa as a "bad person" who killed people, so he acts emotionally cold towards her and manipulates her. [10] The Shinigami who follows her is Rem. Misa also performs two eye trades, cutting her lifespan in half twice; the first was with Rem, and the second with Ryuk. According to How to Read 13, Misa falls into despair after learning of Light's death through Matsuda. Misa commits suicide one year later on February 14, 2011. It is also revealed that the cloaked woman who appears at the end of the manga is not Misa; the woman is an unnamed follower of Kira. At the anime's finale, Misa's suicide is neither mentioned nor seen. Ryuk He's fucking hilarious. I WAS BORED!!! That's his excuse for everything. At the end he's like, LIGHT I'M GONNA KILL YOU NOW CAUSE IF YOU LIVE IT'S GONNA BE BORING FROM NOW ON! Plus he is addicted to apples like people are to drugs. Haha. A shinigami who dropped a Death Note into the human world, which Light would pick up. Acting out of pure boredom, Ryuk begins the story of Death Note on a whim. It is stated that Ryuk obtained the second Death Note in the shinigami world from "tricking the old man" for another one. Ryuk is not Light's ally, and in fact declares in their first meeting that someday he (Ryuk) would write Light's name into his own Death Note. Ryuk often refuses to aid Light and instead enjoys watching him struggle for his goals. He acts for his own interests and entertainment, and often fails to tell Light key details about the Death Note. However, Ryuk will aid Light if it serves his own goals, such as providing amusement or obtaining apples, without which he suffers a form of withdrawal symptoms. Rem A reaper dies if they knowingly increase a human's life span....and Light knew she'd save Misa, and used her to kill L, knowing that Rem would then die too. Rem loved Misa like a daughter...and died cause of it. RIP. It's always the ones that care for others and have moral values that die in this story-well except Light at the end. The female shinigami who first gives Misa her Death Note and trades her for the Shinigami eyes. Similar to Ryuk, Rem possesses two Death Notes; however, she purposely gives one of them to Misa Amane. Rem inherited her second Death Note from Jealous, another shinigami who died when he saved Misa's life, and thought it only right to pass it on to Misa. Rem inherits Jealous' love for Misa as well and is prompt to defend Misa even at the cost of her life. Rem shows this when she states that she will kill Light if Misa dies before her time. Mello He is so fucking gangsta. Yes, I say he's gangsta, cause the character is A PART OF THE MAFIA! The only thing that makes you "gangsta" is if you're actually IN A GANG! IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE YOU'RE FROM, HOW YOU TALK DRESS ETC ETC. IF YOU'RE NOT A MEMEBER OF A GANG YOU ARE NOT A GANGSTA! So, anyway, Mello, who kind of resembles a female, has a chocolate fetish and has burns on his face is fucking gangsta. God I love that, that's why he's my favorite from this story. Not only does he have that badass attitude, he actually IS A PART OF THE MAFIA AND IS HONESTLY TRUTHFULLY 100% GANGSTA! I'm not saying that's good, but I like it. He makes chocolate look hardcore, when he smirks or laughs or whatever, bites into a candy bar and then gives you that evil glare. Mello is the older of L's two successors raised in Wammy's House, Watari's orphanage for gifted children, in Winchester, England, United Kingdom. When it is decided that Mello should work with the other successor, Near, Mello refuses, citing an inability to work with Near, to whom he is considered second. Similar to L's fondness for sweets, Mello is often seen eating bars of chocolate. How to Read 13 states that Mello has "an excellent mind" and that he "sometimes lets his emotions get in his way." The book cites Mello's "hatred of Near," which created "a flaw in [Mello's] personality." Mello's ultimate goal is to destroy the current Kira and obtain the Death Note so he can rule the world. The book states that "Mello is not purely evil." Tsugumi Ohba, the writer of Death Note, stated that Mello "works hard for everything." Ohba added that Mello's name "doesn't really stand for anything." Mello decides to find Kira his own way by joining the Mafia. After obtaining one of the Death Notes from the Kira investigation team by kidnapping Sayu Yagami, Light Yagami sets up a raid that leaves Mello badly scarred and his real name in Light's hands. After learning that Light is Kira, he kidnaps Kiyomi Takada, but is soon killed by Takada's hidden pages of the Death Note. This action causes Teru Mikami to expose his own Death Note to kill Takada, eventually leading to Light's defeat. Mello is the narrator of the spinoff novel Death Note - Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases. In it, he states that he is only telling the story in order to flaunt his greater knowledge of L over Near. Near Twit. He may have been the one to catch Light as L's successor, but he himself as a character has no depth to him. All I know is he isolates himself and plays with puzzles all the time. In Death Note Near is the younger of L's two successors raised in Wammy's House, Watari's orphanage for gifted children, in Winchester, England, United Kingdom. Of the successors, Near is the more level-headed, calmly assessing the situation, while the other, Mello, is more emotional and quick to act. Much like L, Near shows various odd behaviors during his normal life. He is usually seen hunched over than sitting, and he also constantly plays with various toys which he uses in his theories. He shows a great respect for L, basing much of how he solves crime on L's methods, even to the point where he only takes cases that he is interested with rather than trying to pursue justice. Much like L, Near uses the Old English "N" to represent himself. He is voiced by Noriko Hidaka in the Japanese anime, but his voice actor for the English dub has yet to be announced. Sometime after L's death, he works for the United States under the SPK (Secret Provision for Kira) team that is established to investigate Kira. He soon manages to deduce that Light Yagami, posing as L, is actually Kira. After finding that Teru Mikami is Light's proxy and Mello kidnaps Kiyomi Takada, Near is able to switch Mikami's Death Note with a fake one, allowing him to set up a final confrontation that leaves Light exposed. Ryuk kills Light soon after. Near claims that neither of he nor Mello could surpass L alone, but together have done so by inadvertently working together. Near soon takes L's alias, and keeps on the surviving members of the SPK as his subordinates. Tsugumi Ohba, writer of Death Note, said that Near "becomes less likeable" as the story advances, citing Near's plan to take the notebook at a later point in the story. Ohba said that a negative reaction originated from "the difference in their attitudes" and that people may have viewed Near as "a cheat." Ohba added that Near's "cheeky behavior," intended to "reinforce his childishness," had been construed as "annoying."[2] In the final chapter Near brings finger puppets to the Yellow Box Warehouse. Takeshi Obata, artist of Death Note, said that Near first bought the Kira finger puppet and drew on it with a magic marker. Obata then said that Near must have created the other puppets afterwards. Obata views Near as not liking L much so Obata had Near depict L as "ugly", and that Near "worked hard" on Mello's puppet as Near "liked Mello."[2] Obata responded to the question "Who was your least favorite character, Obata- sensei?" by responding "Probably Near [laughs]." Obata added that he enjoyed drawing Near and that Near is also one of his favorite characters.[2] Obata said that he considers Near the smartest character in the manga "because he cheats."[3] When asked about which character was most similar to himself, Ohba indicated Near and "maybe Light." Regarding Near Ohba said that he does not leave his house often.[4] Teru Mikami damn stalker, he has a gay crush on Light, i know it. Okay I see you support him but he is not a fucking "God". Don't call him "God". Then, at the last minute when things seemed to be not going their way he fucking bailed and betrayed his so-called "God". Fucking loser. Mikami is selected as the fourth Kira by Light, after Light decides that it is too dangerous for the Death Note to be near Misa or himself, since he and Misa are currently under surveillance by Aizawa and Mogi. A prosecuting attorney and adamant supporter of Kira, Mikami shares many of the same ideals, thoughts, and priorities as Kira, and is ecstatic when he discovers that Kira, his God, has chosen him, proving that God is on his side and watching. He is completely devoted and loyal to Kira, believing that divine justice must be brought down upon the people. Little is known about his personal life; he appears to have no hobbies or anything else of the sort. He chants "delete" with each name he writes down in the Death Note due to events in his past when he thought God was "deleting" the evil people in his life. He, like Misa, has made the exchange of half his remaining years for Shinigami eyes. |
