Fruits Basket Summary Fruits Basket follows the life of high-school student Tohru Honda, who was recently orphaned when her mother, Kyoko Honda, died in a car accident. After that, Tohru lived with her grandfather, but when his house needs remodeling, Tohru resorts to living in a tent in a forest and holds down a job to support herself. Despite suffering many hardships, Tohru remains optimistic. One day, Tohru comes upon a house in the forest that is the home of her classmate Yuki Sohma and his older relative Shigure Sohma. When the Sohmas discover that Tohru is living in a tent, they are quite surprised by her inner strength. The entire area is Sohma property, and Tohru asks to be allowed to stay in her tent (affectionately dubbed "her castle"). Feeling sorry for her and desperate to end their bachelor days of filthy living conditions, the Sohmas offer her their spare room in exchange for cooking and housework. After a landslide buries her tent, including her mother's picture and school clothes, she has no option but to accept. Soon after she moves in, Kyo Sohma comes to challenge Yuki. Tohru soon discovers the Sohma family's secret, and the reason why Yuki is so private and secretive at school: thirteen members of the family are possessed by the 12 animal spirits of the Chinese Zodiac (jyūnishi in Japanese) plus the spirit of the cat who was, according to legend, left out of the Zodiac. They transform into animals when hugged by the opposite sex or when put under a great deal of emotional or physical stress (such as being sick). When she promises to keep their secret, the Sohmas allow Tohru to keep her memories rather than hypnotically erasing them, a fate that had previously befallen anyone not "Inside" the Sohma family who had discovered the secret. The story follows the lives of Tohru and the Sohma family, as they deal with each other and a society where neither quite fits in, as well as the feared Akito Sohma, head of the Sohma family. Soon, after living with the Sohma family she began to like, then love, all of the Sohmas, and sets out to break the zodiac curse. Tohru Honda Is it even possible for someone to be THAT good natured? I don't know... During the beginning of the story, Tohru lives in a tent because her parents, Kyoko Honda and Katsuya Honda, have died and her grandfather's house is being remodeled. Her grandfather asks her to stay with a friend during the remodeling, but Tohru chooses to live in a tent because she realizes her request would be a burden for her best friends, Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima. Despite the uncomfortable conditions, Tohru remains optimistic, affectionately calling her tent 'my castle'. While leaving her tent to go to school, she comes across Shigure Sohma's house and stops to look at his Zodiac animal decorations. Tohru later discovers that she had been camping on land owned by the Sohma family. After a landslide that destroys her tent, she begins living in the Sohma household, where she cooks and cleans in return for shelter. Over time, Tohru's relationship with the Sohmas becomes much more complex. It is also revealed that several of Tohru's quirks (like her speech) originate from an imitation of her father's character, or at least what she can recall from what Kyoko and her grandfather had told her about Katsuya. Some relatives actually wondered if Tohru really was Katsuya's daughter, and at one point Tohru overheard them discussing this; since then, she decided to imitate her dad's quirks as much as she could, to prove herself as a member of the Honda family. Another one of her quirks, her tendency to be concerned for people with diseases, comes from the situation surrounding her father's death. Katsuya was originally diagnosed with a fever; however, he did not recover and eventually died of pneumonia. After her mother died in a car accident, Tohru moved into a tent on land owned by the Sohma family. She only took a few things with her, including a photograph of her mother, which she talks to. She is later discovered by Shigure and Yuki Sohma, who allow her to live in their home in exchange for her cooking and cleaning. However, the subsequent appearance of Kyo Sohma arriving to challenge Yuki to a fight results in Tohru discovering the secret of the Sohma family; as she attempts to stop the two boys from fighting, she accidentally hugs Kyo and he transforms into a cat. Bewildered, she accidentally ends up falling onto Yuki and Shigure causing them to transform as well, they transform into a rat and dog. The Sohmas reveal that members of their family have been cursed to transform into the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac and a cat. Since Tohru has discovered their secret, her memory is to be erased. However, the head of the family, Akito Sohma, mysteriously decides to allow Tohru to retain her memories and continue living with Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure. Tohru comes to befriend the three Sohmas and hopes that Kyo and Yuki will become friends. As Tohru continues to live with Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure, she also becomes closer to other cursed members of Sohma family and helps to ease their emotional anxieties and distancing from other people. She ends up becoming particularly close to Kyo after the "true form" of his curse is revealed and continues to stay by his side, even after he tried to push her away. After learning of the feelings the cursed members of the Sohma family regarding the curse and a distressing bet that Kyo has made with Akito, Tohru becomes determined to help the Sohmas find a way to break their curse. She and Kyo begin to develop feelings for one another, which further motivates Tohru to find a way to help her new friends find happiness. Tohru's kindness and ability to accept each of the thirteen cursed members of the Sohma family causes Akito to become especially antagonistic to Tohru. However, when Tohru realizes the true nature of Akito's feelings and motivations behind Akito's actions (she has heavy self-worth issues, has been abused by her mother Ren and was kept isolated from reality), Tohru extends her hand to Akito as a gesture of kindness and friendship. However, as Akito is about to accept, Tohru ends up falling down a nearby cliff when the ground collapses. The accident allows Kyo to realize how much he values having Tohru in his life and also allows Akito to finally break away from the role she has held for most of her life. Tohru survives the fall and is hospitalized briefly. During her recovery, Akito accepts Tohru's friendship and is able to accept herself instead of being the person she believed her father wished her to be; her attitudes towards the Jyunishi change as a result. Meanwhile, Tohru and Kyo eventually reconcile when Kyo confesses his feelings for her. It subsequently allows for the curse on the Sohma family to be broken. Shigure Perverted old man...singing about high school girls... Shigure is laid-back and anything but solemn. He is a flirt, a tease, and often acts like a pervert. As a writer of both romance novels and academic books, Shigure loves to drive his editor, Mitchan, insane. His most famous and well- celebrated pen name is Kiritani Noa (western order, Noa Kiritani), which he usually uses for his romance novels, such as 'Summer-Colored Sigh,' which he showed to Saki Hanajima, Arisa Uotani and Kyo Sohma. They give very different reactions, Hanajima asks if a sequel will be coming out, while Uotani says it is unacceptable to write that 'smut' and Kyo comments that it's sick. Tohru thinks it's amazing that she knows an author. Usually, he makes the editor suicidal by telling her that he didn't write anything yet, though he is finished already. Shigure's best friends are Hatori Sohma and Ayame Sohma. This trio has been friends since their childhood. Together their nickname is the Mabudachi Trio. While Ayame and Shigure get along very well, it's less certain how Hatori, who is always exasperated with them, became their friend. Occasionally, Shigure shows that he has another side to himself. He can be surprisingly mature, thoughtful, and gives rather sage and insightful advice to Tohru, Kyo, Yuki, and other characters, acting like an actual "adult". Only in the manga is it revealed that he is also quite cunning and somewhat dark- humoured. It could be said that in some ways Shigure is the one who is most affected by the curse, being in love with Akito and at the same time considered beneath her. It is also speculated and revealed in the manga that, although he does feel brotherly affection for her, Shigure is actually using Tohru Honda to break the Sohma curse. This is not true in the anime. Shigure is normally seen in a traditional kimono. Occasionally when he does business, he wears western style cothing(a suit). Naturally Shigure wears either a gray robe or a navy kimono. In the house, he normally walks around bare-footed while everyone else wears socks. He has his specific reasons for doing so, since it is his house. Shigure is in love with Akito Sohma in the manga. He has previously dated Mayuko Shiraki (Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, Uotani and Hanajima's classroom teacher), though nothing came of it and the relationship began probably because he pitied Mayuko's loneliness. He continues to antagonize her by appearing and interfering with her life with his machinations bringing her closer to Hatori Sohma, for whom she has strong feelings. He is also noted for having sex with Ren Sohma, Akito Sohma's mother, on the basis that Akito had chosen Kureno Sohma over Shigure. Because of that incident, Shigure stated that he hated Kureno Sohma for having an affair with Akito. Akito, angry that he would have an affair with the person she hated most (her mother), kicked him out of the main house. In truth, it appears that Shigure actually loves Akito and has since they were both very young. His manipulations not only appear to be for the purpose of breaking the Jyūnishi curse, but also to get closer to Akito; believing that the end of the curse will cause Akito to let go of the person her father wanted her to be and become her true self (just 'Akito', rather than 'God'). Shigure also states that he slept with Akito's mother, Ren, because she looked like what Akito could have been, if she had she been raised as a woman. In chapter 132, he confessed his feelings to Akito and kissed her. In book 3, it says that Shigure "had a dream about the one I love". This was referring to Akito. Yuki Fag. That's why he's called "the Prince"...that's a fruity name if I ever heard one... they dressed him up like one too. Yuki, attractive and popular, is the heartthrob of his high school. Even though he is often encountered by a Yuki fan club run by the crazy girls who "love" him, he does not accept any girl's crush on him or let any girl hug him. However, he confesses his love for Tohru Honda in volume 11 and end of 10 in the manga series, though it is later revealed that his love for Tohru is not romantic, but more along the lines of thinking of her as a mother figure. In volume 14, he realizes he does not see her as a woman the way Kyo does. This is possibly a result of his distant relationship with his real mother (see below). Eventually, he falls in love with fellow student council member Machi Kuragi, who accepts him completely (even Tohru saw him as a prince, while Machi did not; when another council member commented on his princehood, she replied that he was not at all like a prince, and walked away.) However, in the anime, Yuki's relationship with Tohru is defined to more romantic and portrays, like Kyo's, a relationship that sees Tohru as a potential romantic companion. Yuki in animal formAs a child, Yuki was traumatized by Akito Sohma, the leader of the Sohma family. When Yuki was younger, Akito used to have total control over him. He would telling him terrible things that he could never forget, like that he was the most hated member of the family, and that if it weren't for him, Yuki would have no reason to exist. These statements were seemingly confirmed by the behavior of the rest of the family: Hatsuharu proclaimed he hated Yuki (although he later comes to adore Yuki), despite the fact he had never met him before. His brother, Ayame Sohma, brushed off his cry for help, and Kyo always hated and blamed him. Everyone else in the zodiac did not speak with him, though that was probably not an intentional snub on their part. On top of being mentally abusive, Akito was often physically abusive as well, and sometimes would lock Yuki away inside a dark room to torment him. As a result of the combined abuse, Yuki has terribly low self-esteem, and suffers from self-hatred and an inferiority complex. Though his outward demeanor shows nothing of his childhood torture, Yuki reveals to Tohru that he does not care or appreciate who he is as his personality was shaped to please others and conform to society, which he incidentally exceeds at. Yuki's worst enemy would be Kyo Sohma, the cat of the zodiac. Hatsuharu Sohma felt animosity towards Yuki during part of their childhood because of the story often told to Haru about the rat taking advantage of the stupid cow; this made Haru develop an inferiority complex towards his older cousin. However, after actually meeting Yuki face-to-face, Haru was able to see Yuki's extreme kindness and developed a deep admiration for him. Yuki also feels a close connection with his cousin Kisa Sohma, as Kisa was teased because the children in her class thought she was different from others. Until Tohru Honda touched her heart, she couldn't speak and didn't go to school. Likewise Yuki, despite his popularity, rarely interacted with anyone on a personal level and was extremely private and introverted. Until he met Tohru, Yuki was afraid of becoming close to anyone because of an incident during his childhood when his secret was discovered by his friends during a game of tag, when Akito ordered Hatori Sohma to erase the children's memories, thus leaving Yuki alone and without friends. After meeting Tohru, Yuki started warming up to other people and becomes much more social, as well as accepting who he really is. Yuki also appears to have respiratory problems, due to his weak bronchial tubes, and gets regular checkups from Hatori to monitor his condition. In his childhood these asthma attacks were apparently frequent, though they appear to be less so in the present. Still, he has to take extra precautions because he occasionally has attacks, which could cause him to transform in public. Throughout the manga, the attacks are less and less frequent. After Kyo was freed from the curse, a series of events was triggered and the rest of the cursed Sohma family members became free. Yuki is the last Sohma member to be freed, noticing this as he was talking to Machi. The spirit of the zodiac took the rat spirit and thanked Yuki for keeping his promise for a long time. It is possible perhaps Yuki was the last one to be freed because he was the rat, the first of the Jyuunishi. Kyo My dude! He's angsty, and has a reason to be, with what "the spirit of the cat" is posessed with...and that they have to lock him up. He transforms into an orange cat whenever he is hugged by the opposite gender or when his body comes under a great deal of stress. This animal, is not in the Chinese zodiac, but legend says would have been if it had not been tricked by the rat into missing the induction feast.[1] As part of his curse, Kyo transforms into a hideous monster whenever his Juzu beads bracelet are taken off. Kyo usually acts short-tempered, impulsive, and rude, but that is only one side to this complex character. He is also sometimes called "Kyonkyon"(by classmates in episode three of the anime, which makes him angry) and "Kyonkichi", which means 'lucky Kyo', mainly by Shigure Sohma and Ayame Sohma, who enjoy teasing him. One example of this is when Shigure teases him to the point when he stomps off into the forest on the verge of tears. He also appears to have a strong dislike for leeks, and the smell of them makes him sick. Kyo's mother, in despair over having her son born a 'monster', committed suicide by walking in front of an oncoming train (Chapter 119) when he was a young child of possibly four to six years old. His father abandoned him as well, blaming Kyo for his mother's death. People have criticized Kyo throughout his life for his differences, too frightened or never bothering to glance beyond the label of 'The Cat' and regard Kyo as a true person. Like most of the Sohmas, throughout his school years, he begins to get picked on for the color of his hair but he would chase them around, threatning to kill them, which was around the time his temper began. Because of the Jyuunishi curse, Kyo must always wear a Juzu bead bracelet. These beads were made from the bones of a priest and warrior, and so they are a powerful protective charm. The beads themselves are made up of bone, some being white (or white-yellow), some being red, supposedly stained with blood (Chapter 61). Whenever these beads are taken off his wrist, Kyo transforms into the cat's "true form", which is a beast that resembles a mutated rabbit. This form is a result of the Jyuunishi curse, and only the cat transforms into this form. The Juzu beads are handed down to the current cat of the Zodiac from the previous cat, and must always be worn. In episode 24 Kazuma Sohma takes the beads off Kyo's wrist and he turns into the cat's true form. He does this purposely in front of Tohru Honda, trying to test what Tohru truly feels for Kyo. Kagura Stalker idiot. HE DOESN'T FUCKING LIKE YOU, AND TACKLING KYO ISN'T GONNA MAKE HIM LIKE YOU! Since she and Kyo Sohma are both part of the zodiac, and they can hug without transforming, Kagura believed they are meant for each other. She can be outrageous and impulsive with her actions, so she initially is very audacious with her declarations of love for Kyo. Kagura claims that Kyo promised to marry her when he was a child, but he claims that she forced him to do so; she threatened him with a knife in the manga, and in the anime with a boulder. Rin Sohma, however, questions what Kagura calls "love" for Kyo and Kagura later realizes that perhaps that her feelings in the beginning were more so out of pity than true love. When she was little, Kagura began playing with Kyo because she was relieved that there was someone who was less fortunate than her. On the day when Kagura took Kyo's beads away and first discovered Kyo's "true form", she ran away in fright. She realizes now how she must have hurt Kyo's feelings very badly, so she reveals to Kyo that the reason why she "loved" him was because she wanted to feel better about herself and believed she could wash away the selfishness by loving him. Kagura ends up apologizing for being so selfish and appears to accept the budding relationship between Tohru and Kyo at this point. Kagura lives with her mother, who is rather protective of her daughter, and father. Kagura's cousin Rin has also lived with them for quite some time, though Kagura's mother has noted Rin never seems to attempt to make their home hers. While Kagura always considered Rin her friend, the two were not as close as Kagura thought. The two have since become closer after Rin began to live at the home of Kazuma Sohma as she recovered from a recent incident and Kagura frequently visits her, despite Rin's visible irritation with Kagura's chipper attitude and invitations to join the other Jyuunishi in leisure activities. Kagura still cares for Kyo, perhaps more like a brother now. In chapter 114, after Tohru tells Rin about her feelings towards Kyo, Kagura gets rather angry. She runs up to Tohru and slaps her so hard that Tohru is knocked unconscious. Apparently Kagura believes that Kyo deserves to know that Tohru loves him and refuses to apologize, having "spoken through their fists" as she puts it. Rin, whom Kagura had been visiting when the incident occurred, attacks Kagura for slapping Tohru (likely because of Rin's own history of being abused by her parents); Kagura realizes that she has been insensitive and apologizes to Rin while explaining why she chose to hit Tohru. With Kyo being freed from the curse, a series of events causes the other members of the cursed family to be freed. Kagura noticed she was freed as she was walking in the streets. From all the Sohma family members, Kagura seems to be the only one (aside from Momiji Sohma); who does not have any sort of relationship with someone in the end, this reason is unidentified. Oddly enough, Kagura is one of the few members of the Jyūnishi who has never been hurt by Akito directly or indirectly (Ayame Sohma and Ritsu Sohma appear to be the only other ones). It is especially unusual because of Akito's tendencies to hurt the female members of the Jyūnishi (ie. Rin and Kisa Sohma), though some readers (and watchers) theorize her violent nature protects her from persecution. Hatori Not much to say...hello doctor. Hatori is the family doctor of the Sohma clan. Even though he is a deep and gentle man, he can be rough with his patients, namely Shigure (as a joke after Shigure kept annoying him, Hatori deliberately kept missing the spot in Shigure's arm where a shot was supposed to be administered). While he appears to be very serious and grim -Akito once said, "Hatori, you're as cold as snow"- deep down he really has a warm, gentle and caring nature. He is perceptive, but not talkative. Hatori appears to be the one who understands Shigure's true nature best and is often the one Shigure will semi-openly discuss his machinations. Hatori also likes to read books, usually books of very old genres often found only at the Shiraki family's bookstore, and he finds books Shigure wants him to read - namely, the books Shigure has written- are often terrible in taste. Whenever Akito Sohma decides that someone is to have his memory erased to protect the Sohma secret, Hatori is the one who executes Akito's order. It is unknown how he does such things, but the event usually occurs as he lifts his hand upon the victim's forehead and, with a flash, they collapse and awake without such memories. In Volume 15, an author's note from Natsuki Takaya reveals that this technique has been passed down from Hatori's line of the family, but nothing more after that. As of now, he has erased the memories of Yuki Sohma's friends, Momiji Sohma's mother, and Akito’s second cousin and Hatori's former lover, Kana. In chapter 130, Hatori is freed from the curse. Hatsuharu Him and Isuzu are the perfect gothic couple-why don't you fuck her already dammit?? You talk about tits all the time!!! Haru has something of a split personality. His darker side, 'Black Haru', revealed when annoyed or threatened, transforms the usually calm, stoic, and well- mannered boy into a brash, violent, and perverted individual. His alter ego originated from teasing when he was young; adults accused the ox of being stupid for letting the rat ride on its back during the journey to the banquet of the Chinese Zodiac. Haru bitterly blamed Yuki Sohma, the rat in the Sohma clan, but Yuki helped him realize that Haru was not at fault for the ox's actions. Since then, Haru has claimed that Yuki was his first love. He went out of his way to protect Yuki from Akito Sohma, even making a deal with Shigure Sohma, agreeing to call him 'sensei' if Shigure would rescue Yuki from Akito and let Yuki live in his house. Hatsuharu's black and white hair is natural and is a representation of his split- personality, as well as a visual pun on the coloring of a cow. Those people who do not know about the Sohma's curse assume he dyes his hair white and lets the roots show. It is said that his hair is split black and white everywhere. It's even hinted that he, in 'Black mode' showed a student who interrogated him about his head hair being white and black his pubic hair, which should be white and black as well. Haru is very close to Kisa Sohma. When Kisa ran away from home as a result of classmates' teasing, he, along with Kisa's mother, were the only ones who made the effort to search for her. Haru is introduced as wanting to fight Kyo. As children, both took up martial arts in order to release anger. However, Kyo belittled Haru's fighting. It seems that defeating Kyo will prove his worth as a fighter. However, his first and only battle with Kyo in the series is cut short by Yuki fainting from an asthma attack. Though Haru tells Kyo they can continue their fight later, he never actually takes on the challenge again. In the anime, he later says that Kyo actually backed down from the challenge, but the challenge is never really finished. In chapter 130, Haru is freed from the curse. When Isuzu Sohma was younger, she was hospitalized, and her parents refused to see her. Haru frequently visited and spent time with her; they gradually fell in love and began to date in secret. Later, Rin broke up with him, telling Haru that she didn't love him anymore, though that was not her true motive; Akito had found out about their relationship and, out of fury, pushed Rin through a window. Not wanting Haru to be injured as well, Rin isolated herself from him for, as she felt, both of their safety. Afterward, Rin became ill and hospitalized again. Haru tried to visit her, but she drove him away, even swinging IV's at him. Though Haru did not hear much from Rin after that, he still sees her whenever he has the opportunity. Later on, Haru learns from Hiro Sohma of Akito's deed, and his anger is evident. Haru confronts Akito, who counters by forcing Haru to take partial responsibility for Rin's injuries; it was in part his desire to be with her without considering the consequences and being unable to see it was Akito who hurt her in the first place that caused it. Hiro Sohma convinces Haru that he should go see Rin, who has been hospitalized (and later runs away from the hospital), instead of trying to hurt Akito. Haru finds her and they reconcile now that he knows Rin's reasons for breaking up with him. When Tohru Honda comes to visit Rin, Hatsuharu remarks that he is happy that Rin is learning about the joys of friendship. In chapter 130, both Rin and Hatsuharu are freed from the curse and they both embrace each other lovingly. Isuzu(rin) My favorite character, that's a bad bitch. Love her clothes, and she's just...I don't know, there's something about her dark aura that I like. When Rin was young, her parents were affectionate and devoted to her. Since Rin knew that members of the Sohma clan usually resented their cursed children, or had troubles and doubts, she asked her parents if they were happy, if there was nothing that bothered them. Her innocent question shattered their caring attitude; their affection had been nothing but a facade for her benefit. After that, they never treated Rin decently again. She was neglected and physically abused to the point of being hospitalized, at which time her parents told her that they did not want her to come home again. At this point, Rin moved into Kagura Sohma's home. This has been one of the reasons as to why Rin dislikes being in the hospital and often tries to sneak out before she has fully recovered. Rin is a willful, proud woman who despises the way the other members of her clan submit to Akito. Although she isolates herself, she can occasionally be seen in the company of Hiro, who along with Haru, Kagura, and Kagura's mother, were the only visitors Rin had during her stays in the hospital. Rin resided at Kagura Sohma's house and recently graduated from a girls' private school, although Akito prevented her from attending the graduation ceremony. Rin suffers from stomach ulcers and eats little, due to stress and psychological trauma. In addition, she feels uncomfortable eating around others, with the exception of Haru and later, Tohru Honda. Ayame He needs to lay off the sugar...and stop being so obsessed with costumes...no wonder his brother Yuki hates him... Ayame transforms into the snake of the Chinese Zodiac whenever he is hugged by the opposite gender or when his body comes under a great deal of stress, such as when he gets too cold or hot. The older brother (and antithesis) of Yuki Sohma, he is flamboyant, expressive, and anything but soft-spoken. According to Natsuki Takaya, he usually wears long-sleeved shirts because he is prone to sunburn (possibly due to his zodiac animal, the snake) He often realizes too late that he has hurt other people emotionally from being self-centered. He also, as said by Shigure, has confidence above the chart that is impossible to achieve when Ritsu said that he wanted to be as confident as Ayame. Takaya derived Ayame's name from the fifth month, which is the month of the snake, of the fomer Japanese lunar calendar, Ayamezuki, or "month of falling irises".[2] (Ayame is normally a female name, meaning iris.) In addition, his name is a pun on his clothing store: the kanji mean pattern, design, or distinction, refering to his clothing store and his noted "keen eye for detail." He is one of the members of the Mabudachi Trio, consisting of the three oldest members of the zodiac. The other two are Shigure Sohma and Hatori Sohma, who are also his best friends. Despite his age, he refers to himself with the young "boku" instead of a more mature "ore". Ayame is also one of the few members of the Jyūnishi who has never been hurt by Akito Sohma directly or indirectly (Kagura Sohma and Ritsu Sohma appear to be the only other ones). He may have escaped simply by being beyond Akito's reach. He often calls Kyo Kyonkichi(-kun). Ayame's flamboyant, dramatic behavior and weird pretenses are a source of comic relief in the series. He's known for his dramatic entrances, such as when he sweeps into Yuki's teacher's office with a giant bunch of roses, or when he rushes to greet Yuki wearing a wedding dress. Despite his massive charm, he does seem to be rather socially clumsy when it comes to deeper emotions, since he can't quite figure out how to get close to Yuki. Unfortunately, he hasn't entirely lost his self-centeredness, though he grows much kinder as time goes on. Ayame has a tendency to not entirely listen to what other people say, or to make up dramatic histories on the spot, since in high school he browbeat the principal into believing he was royal. Rather than argue or debate, he tends to steamroll people with his outrageous personality until they give up. In his first few appearances he often exchanges loverlike greetings with Shigure, and implies that they are sleeping together, claiming that he couldn't stay with Shigure overnight because "he'd keep me awake." Most of these end with both of them giving the thumbs-up, and yelling "All right!" It is eventually revealed that this is simply an elaborate joke between the two of them, true to both of their overly dramatic personalities, and their loves lie with Mine and Akito respectivley. Kisa Shy little girl. She's ok. She transforms into the tiger of the Chinese Zodiac whenever she is hugged by the opposite sex or her body comes under a great deal of stress. Kisa is the second youngest Sohma under the curse, losing to Hiro Sohma by one year. Of all the cursed Sohmas, Kisa is probably the most gentle and least confrontational. Natsuki Takaya derived Kisa's name from the second month, which is the month of the tiger, of the fomer Japanese lunar calendar, Kisaragi, or "changing clothes month".[1] Her name also refers to her strange hair color: Shikisai in Japanese means color or hue. Kisa is extremely shy and introverted. This is due in great part to the teasing she received at her school. Like many of the cursed Sohmas, Kisa has some unique physical features, noticeably her yellow-orange hair and golden eyes. At the beginning of the teasing, Kisa remained strong and ignored the mockery. In the story, Momiji Sohma reveals that when the first insults failed, Kisa's classmates began to ignore her. Eventually, they would stop ignoring her just long enough to laugh at anything she said. As a result, Kisa withdrew into herself and locked away her words, refusing to speak. Tohru Honda was able to understand Kisa's problem and heal her emotionally. Kisa calls Tohru "onee- chan", or big sister, as Tohru is a sister figure to her. Tohru and Kisa hug with hearts being the primary background effects in both anime and manga whenever they meet. Kisa's favourite food is nira-tama and she seems to enjoy sweets in general (including crepes). Kisa has an interest in an anime called Mogeta, a rather odd anime that Hiro, Kisa, and Momiji watch together. Throughout the series, she seeks advice and guidance from Hiro (though she often misunderstands him). Momiji Annoying female looking dude-LAY OFF THE SUGAR DAMMIT. Momiji is a Eurasian. More specifically, he is of both German and Japanese descent, with his father being Japanese and his mother German. In the manga, he frequently switches between the two languages, much to the bafflement of Tohru. Momiji is considered the most adorable of the Sohmas. Momiji is introduced in volume two. Tohru works in a building owned by Momiji's father and runs into Momiji. She mistakes him for a foreigner because of his appearance and because he talks in German. He kisses her on the cheek, to her surprise (which does not happen in the anime). At a school fair not long after their first meeting, he is introduced along with Hatori Sohma. He instantly befriends Tohru Honda, glad that she, a person outside the Sohma clan, knows of their family secret. Momiji is a painfully adorable, androgynous-looking teenager (Tohru believed him to be in grade school until it is revealed he is the same age as Hatsuharu) who is gentle, playful, and can always offer a kind word. He is also extremely perceptive and is rather tactful. He enjoys eating junk food (especially pastries and sweets) and is rarely seen without a lollipop or some other treat. Kyo Sohma often picks on Momiji, whacking him on the head while Momiji cries, "Kyo is hurting me again!" (in the anime "Kyo's hitting me!") In volume 4 chapter 19 he wore the girl's uniform on his first day of high school, which caused quite the commotion until Hatsuharu defended him and his crossdressing was grudgingly accepted. When asked, Momiji explained he liked the girl's uniform, with short shorts, because he looked better in it. Later he finally wears the boy's uniform with girls exclaiming how cute he is, but ruined the moment by asking Tohru to buy an ice cream so they can share it. Momiji was born into the richer families of the Sohma clan. His father, who is Japanese, owns a number of companies, one of which Momiji's best friend, Tohru Honda, works at as a janitor. Although Momiji almost always appears to be care-free, he lives with a mournful past, much like Tohru's. When his mother first held him, immediately after his birth, he transformed, and his mother first learned of zodiac curse; from then on she rejected him and eventually had a breakdown because of it. She later requested to have her memories erased by Hatori Sohma so she could recover. When asked if she would regret the procedure, she responded by saying that the greatest regret she had was that "that creature", referring to Momiji, had come out of her body. Momiji, standing hidden just outside the room, overheard this and was, needless to say, extremely saddened. Tohru asks Momiji if he ever wanted to forget about his mother, and what has emotionally scarred him in life. He replies that even though that has made him very sad, he would never want to forget about it.[3] Momiji attends Kaibara high school with Tohru, Yuki Sohma, and Kyo Sohma, in the year below them, along with Hatsuharu Sohma. In his first year of high school, Momiji wore a girl's uniform (with short shorts), because he liked the way it looked on him. In chapter 115 of the manga, Momiji is freed from the curse. Around this time, we see that he has grown up both emotionally and physically (the girls at school describe him as charming and "princely" when he finally decides to wear a boy's uniform, though the image is somewhat ruined when he asks Tohru if she wants to buy an ice cream cake to share with the others). Akito Interesting-very well developed. At first it's easy to hate her, until you find out she's not a man but a woman being forced to live as a man and about her life, then you understand her. But they don't excuse her behavior towards everyone else though. Not a typical "villain" at all, and in the end, she finds healing. Akito Sohma was born female, the child of Akira Sohma (then the head of the Sohma family) and Ren Sohma (a maid in the Main House); according to the Fruits Basket Character Book, his Western zodiac sign is Cancer, and his blood type is AB. Akito's true gender is known only to the four eldest cursed Sohmas—Hatori, Shigure, Ayame, and Kureno—who, on the night of Akito's conception, had a dream in which the god-spirit of the Chinese Zodiac told the boys that he was coming to be amongst them, as was promised hundreds of years before (chapter 131). (According to the author, Natsuki Takaya, the birth of a child possessed of the god-spirit is a rare occurrence.[3]) Long before Akito was born, Ren demanded that Akito be raised male or else she wouldn't give birth to the child; Ren claimed that having a female heir would "cause problems," though the more likely reason for raising Akito male (as Shigure pointed out in a chapter 115 flashback) was because of Ren's insecurity over not being first in Akira's heart, and her jealousy of her husband's great affection for their child. Fearing that Ren would actually abort the baby, Akira agreed to these terms. (Even so, in some flashbacks to Akito's childhood, as in chapters 115 and 117, Akito is depicted wearing a little girl's kimono, and Akira even called Akito a "special girl" within the same scene.) When Akito was born, apparently the most excited one over the birth was Akira. Since Akito was revealed to be possessed by the god-spirit of the Chinese Zodiac (Akito uniformly refers to himself as God in the english-language translation; however, a more accurate translation would be Jade Emperor, who is both the leader of the Chinese Zodiac and the primary deity of the Taoist religion), Akira saw this as a sign that his relationship with Ren was "special," and because of Akito's "godliness," he and others in the inner circle lavished Akito with attention. Ren, however, was not glad over Akito's birth, and according to chapter 115 of the manga, refused to even hold Akito as a baby. In Akito's recollection of childhood, he says of Ren, "Mother was cold-hearted, and her anger was always aimed at me. I hate her." (Chapter 117) Sometime in Akito's childhood, Akira's illness took a turn for the worse. On his death-bed, he told the young Akito not to be afraid, adding that he would always be with him, even if he couldn't physically see him. Akira went onto confess that he had wanted Ren to be the happiest over Akito, because Akito was a "special existence," and therefore he and Ren were special. After he passed away, when Ren found out that no one had come to get her when Akira had been dying, she yelled at the young Akito that he was an unwanted existence, and that he had only been a little toy to amuse Akira; Ren also added that, because Akira was dead, no one had any more need of him. Akito countered these statements, telling his hysterical mother that his father had loved him; but because of Akira's parting words, even Akito herself doubted that Akira had loved him the most, fearing that he had "lost" to "that woman" (Ren). One of the elderly maids, wanting to comfort Akito, proceeded to give him an empty box, claiming that Akira's spirit was inside it, and that he had wanted only Akito to receive such a special gift. (The same maid later claimed, in chapter 117, that the box was of course empty, and only given to Akito to help him through such a stressful time, adding that Akito should have well known that his father's spirit wasn't really inside the box.) All of his life, Akito kept this box hidden away in his room; he told Kureno in chapter 117 that part of him didn't believe that anything was inside of the box, yet another part always hoped that maybe there was. After his father's early death, Akito became the head of the Sohma family (raised to appear and act as a male), in addition to his role as God of the Zodiac animals. According to an interview with Natsuki Takaya, Akito was enrolled in "better" and "more expensive" schools than everyone else in the Zodiac, though he completed all of his schooling (including high school) by correspondence. For the first two volumes of the series, Akito is only mentioned in conversations by the Sohma family, or in brief flashbacks, all of which give a vague, foreboding image of the mysterious "head of the family." (For example, in chapter two, Yuki recalls Akito telling him as a child that if anyone ever found out he turned into a rat, they'd think he was a freak and abandon him.) Also mentioned several times in the first two volumes is that no one in the Sohma family—specifically, the Juunishi—can go against any of Akito's orders. It is later revealed in volume 11 that Akito is possessed of the Zodiac's god-spirit, and therefore, all the cursed Sohmas have to obey his every word, no matter what. Ever since chapter two, it had been hinted at that both Akito and Shigure were scheming something that involved Tohru, which was why she was allowed to keep her memories and live with the Sohmas. While it was eventually revealed that Akito and Shigure had different, separate reasons for allowing Tohru to grow closer to the Sohmas, Akito's own motive was fully explained in chapter 117. A while before the beginning of the manga's time-line, Yuki had left the Main House to live with Shigure. At that time, Akito's mother, Ren, commented that it seemed as if everyone was abandoning him, just like she had always predicted they would. Akito denied this, arguing that the Juunishi would come back to him in the end, since they were all connected by the inseparable Zodiac bonds. Ren, however, challenged Akito to prove this, saying that if Akito allowed the Juunishi to stray and to form other bonds with "outsiders," and they abandoned him, then Akito would have to bow down before Ren and leave the Sohmas forever; on the other hand, if the Juunishi still returned to Akito's side after going out into the world, then Akito would win. Soon after this bet was made, Shigure approached Akito about allowing Tohru stay with him, Yuki, and Kyo. Akito, confident that he would win against Ren, consented to this. Since Akito believed that the world was a cruel, bleak place in which unconditional love did not exist outside of the Zodiac bonds, he also believed that Tohru would eventually end up rejecting the Juunishi; thus, he was certain that Yuki and the others would end up heart-broken by the world, and would return to his side forever. In chapter 10, when Tohru visits the Sohma estate for the first time, she learned from Momiji that Hatori was nearly blind in his left eye, because years before, he had asked Akito permission to marry a woman he loved, Kana; Akito had flown into a frenzy of rage, accidentally injuring Hatori's eye, and blaming it on Kana, who never recovered from the shock of the accident; instead, Kana accepted Akito's blame and guiltily agonized over the incident, growing ill, until Akito convinced Hatori to erase Kana's memories of her love for him. In chapter 97, it is made clear that Akito reacted so horribly to the idea of being "replaced" in Hatori's heart at the time because, when he was a child, Kureno's curse/bond had broken for unknown reasons. Since that day, Akito—fearing that allowing any of the Juunishi to form "other bonds" with outsiders would break the rest of the curse and bonds—kept the Juunishi on a tight leash, and instilled in them doubt and self-hatred to make certain that they would never leave him. (In one of Yuki's childhood flashbacks in chapter 84, he remembered the day when Akito first "snapped," painted the walls of his room black, and locked Yuki away in a dark room. It is assumed, from further flashbacks of Kureno's in chapter 97, that Akito's mini-mental breakdown was a result of his curse breaking around the same time.) Tohru first caught a glimpse of Akito watching her from a window in chapter 10; however, it is not until chapter 20 that Akito first made his official debut in the manga. Akito visited Tohru, Kyo, and Yuki's school for the day, and approached Tohru alone; he called Tohru "a cute girl" and kindly asked her to take good care of his family. At first, Tohru was shocked at Akito's friendly attitude and sunny smile, wondering if she was meeting the same person who'd almost blinded Hatori. However, Tohru soon realized that Akito's polite air was an act, as Akito's eyes belied his thinly-veiled hatred. When Yuki later appeared, Akito chastised him for skipping the family's New Years banquet, and threatened to lock Yuki away in the dark room of his childhood again to teach him a lesson. Tohru, sensing Yuki's fear, physically pushed Akito away, who, although quite shocked, left soon after without much of a fuss. As Shigure later relayed to Hatori that, on the car ride home, Akito spoke of how "ugly" and less-than- clever Tohru was, boasting that Yuki would surely come back to him in the end. In chapter 120, it was revealed that Akito had always been lonely and afraid of change. The reason that he clung so desperately to the Juunishi bonds was that he feared that, without them, he would be all alone, and his existence meaningless, just as his mother had always claimed. This revelation occurred after both Momiji's and Hiro's curses broke. With the bonds falling apart, Akito— after having wrongfully stabbed Kureno in the back—ran away from the Sohma estate, wondering if everything really was all his fault, and why his world was collapsing so suddenly. Desperate and looking for someone to blame, Akito suddenly realizes that the Juunishi had been slowly but surely leaving ever since Tohru had appeared in their lives. Akito then walks to Shigure's home and finds Tohru alone outside. Akito comments that Tohru must be happy, because she had "won" and had, in the process, destroyed the only life he had known. Akito then threatens Tohru with a knife; but Tohru, realizing how both she and Akito had been trying to hold onto an "unchanging" reality (Akito clinging to the eternal bonds of the Zodiac; Tohru wanting her mother to always be first in her heart), told Akito that she understood how scary it is to be alone, and instead offered her hand in friendship. Before Akito could accept, the unstable cliff ground collapsed and Tohru fell, while Akito screamed for help. (In the first volume of the series, just after a landslide destroyed Tohru's tent, Shigure warned her that the ground around the area was unstable and due to collapse again one day.) When Tohru (who recovered at the hospital) was finally allowed visitors beyond her immediate family, Akito was surprisingly one of the first to visit (and even more surprisingly, according to Hatori and Shigure, he went alone and entirely on her own accord). Fearful that he would be rejected by Tohru and Kureno (both of whom he'd hurt, emotionally and physically), Akito was told a comforting story by Momiji, who also offered advice that made it possible for Akito to see Tohru and Kureno for who they really are: People whose kindness for others overrides their ability to be concerned about themselves. With that in mind, he finally went to see Tohru, who offered her hand (despite the fact her arm is injured) to Akito in friendship again, which he accepted with a small smile. Akito also visited Kureno in the hospital, whom he had stabbed in the back (chapter 118); Kureno, however, didn't blame Akito for his actions, and forgave him when Akito cried and apologized to him repeatedly for smothering him all of the years he'd kept him close. From there on out, Akito decided to try to change rather than cling to being "God," and to the memory of his father and what he had wanted him to be (chapter 132). Towards the end of the manga, after Kureno left to live in the country with Arisa Uotani, and the curse was broken, Akito and Shigure finally confessed their true feelings for each other and reconciled. Akito begins living and dressing as a woman, and in her last meeting with all the formerly cursed Sohmas, she wore a furisode (female kimono), and donned a flower in her hair, something that shocked the younger Sohmas, who had just learned of Akito's true gender. Kureno Boring dude. Kureno is one of the older members of the Zodiac, along with Shigure, Ayame, and Hatori. Those four were the first to know that the child possessed by God (Akito) had been conceived. They were also the only members of the Zodiac to know about Akito's true gender. When Kureno was 16, he somehow was freed from the Zodiac curse for unknown reasons. This caused Akito to panic and have a mini-breakdown, since she feared that without the Zodiac curse, she would be all alone. To hide the fact that he was free, she forced Kureno to promise to stay by her side and never abandon her. Because he felt sorry for Akito, Kureno agreed. This meant that he had very little contact with any of the other Zodiac members. He later told Tohru about how he was "free" and later rescued Rin when Akito had her locked up for trying to steal a box. Akito Sohma keeps Kureno close and isolated from others, even from the other cursed members of the Sohma clan, dominating nearly every aspect of his life. Kureno is rarely permitted to leave the house. Of the Sohma clan, Kureno knows the least about the outside world. Kureno is the first to be freed from the curse; he was around 16 at the time this occurred (approximately 10 years before Fruits Basket takes place). Akito, as a young child, broke down in tears and begged him to stay by her side, fearing that no one else would truly be with her; Kureno, seeing Akito as a crying young girl, hugged her and agreed. Thus he stays with her despite her possessiveness and fear of losing him; "it's all for the sake of that weak, timid, sad little girl", he tells Tohru. Kureno was the one who revealed to Tohru that Akito was a woman. He also revealed that the person she thought was Akito the day she had visited him at the main house was, in fact, Akito's mother, Ren Sohma. Kureno was also stabbed in the back by Akito. It was hinted that he was severely injured when Arisa discovered a fallen sparrow outside one of her part-time jobs. After Akito confronts Tohru at Shigure's house, she confesses to Shigure that she stabbed Kureno, and Shigure, hoping to clear things up, calls the main house to discover that Kureno is recovering at the hospital. According to an interview with Natsuki Takaya, though Kureno was possessed by the spirit of the Rooster, he, in fact, transformed into a sparrow. When asked about what bird Kureno transformed into before he was freed from the curse, Takaya stated she originally thought a rooster, but decided that his animal form would be a sparrow, believing it fitted his character more.[3] It is revealed that around the time that Kureno was released from the curse, and was begged by Akito to stay by her side, Kureno took pity on her. It is said later that Kureno had slept with Akito to alleviate her fears of him leaving, which consequently angered Shigure. Out of spite, Shigure, who loved Akito, slept with Akito's mother Ren: The person Akito hated more than anyone else. This is the reason for the animosity that Kureno and Shigure have between them (though it is worth noting that while Kureno does not particularly like Shigure, he has never outright said that he hated him; Shigure on the other hand has told Kureno that he hated him to his face). Hiro Hiro is probably the most confrontational and aggressive of all the cursed Sohmas on the outside. Often, he acts rude and sarcastic around others and hides many of his true feelings. He often uses a twisted logic to talk down to adults who act in ways he does not like. Tohru is often the victim, such as when she is willing to pick up a shoe he dropped, at which time he also asks her if she would jump off a bridge if someone asked her to. He is also somewhat like Kyo Sohma. Though seemingly very brash and stubborn for his age, on the inside, Hiro is still just a young boy learning how to cope with complicated issues along with bearing the weight of the Sohma family curse. However, as the series progresses, Hiro is seen growing tall and becoming much more mature. Hiro is the sheep in the story and has strong feelings for Kisa Sohma (the tiger.) He also ends up growing attatched to Tohru Honda since she helped him proudly accept that he isn't as confident as he says (although Tohru doesn't come out and say that to him, but to Hiro he feels that he is.) Ritsu THAT IS A MAN NOT A WOMAN! I REPEAT-THAT IS A MAN, NOT A WOMAN! HE LIKES TO CROSS-DRESS! Ritsu is an insecure character who dresses in women's clothing to conceal his feelings of inadequacy. He believes that because he sees himself as not particularly intelligent or physically powerful, he brings disgrace upon the Sohma family. He is constantly apologizing for his actions, even when he is not at fault. He can also be suicidal and has a certain spot on his side that makes him faint; Shigure Sohma takes advantage of it quite often, calling it 'the magic touch'. Ritsu's insecurity likely derived from his childhood constantly witnessing his parents, particularly his mother, continually apologizing for Ritsu's faults. His mother, while hardworking and dedicated to running the Sohma family's onsen hotel, was easily stressed and had a tendency to overact. Witnessing his mother working and his parents apologizing constantly impacted his character greatly and Ritsu soon began exhibiting these traits as well. In hopes of overcoming his lack of self-esteem (perhaps thinking rather ambitiously in hoping to become more like his cousin, Ayame), he decides to meet with Tohru Honda, who helped the shy Kisa Sohma overcome her problems as well as other members of the Jyūnishi. Ritsu is also one of the few members of the Jyūnishi who has never been hurt by Akito Sohma directly or indirectly (Kagura Sohma and Ayame Sohma appear to be the only other ones). This is both surprising and a blessing given that Ritsu tends to dress and act very feminine (a fact that Akito would not tolerate given that she despises the female members of the Zodiac, claiming them to be "stealing" the males away.), especially given the fact that Ritsu lacks confidence. Possible theories include that Ritsu is already messed up enough, that there is nothing Akito could do for him, to the fact that Akito also has gender issues. He also is extremely gullible, believing all of Shigure's tricks. Arisa Kyoko Honda, Tohru's mother, helped Arisa Uotani give up life as a member of an all-girl gang (Kyoko was an ex-gang member herself). Since then, she— affectionately called Uo-chan by her friends (see Honorific speech in Japanese) — has been very protective of Tohru, and is grateful for Kyoko's influence. Her rough exterior is a misleading first impression, for close friends know her true generous spirit. In school, Kyo Sohma is her adversary (though they are very much alike in certain ways), and they bicker often. Due to her background, The Prince Yuki Fangirls find her scary and violent, and generally stay away from her. Later in the manga, she falls in love with Kureno Sohma, not knowing he is related to her rival as well as is the personal assistant to the ruthless head of the family, Akito Sohma. Also, In Chapter 71 of the manga, it is revealed that Arisa may be considering becoming a model due to Tohru Honda's suggestion. During her childhood, Arisa's mother eloped with another man when Arisa was in first grade, causing her father to turn into an alcoholic after his wife left. This severely saddened Arisa and, like her father, caused her to resort to something in which she believed would make her pain easier to deal with, though in her case it was through becoming a violent, aggressive gang-member. One day when she was in middle school, already well into her 'career' as a gangster, she heard gossip from her other gang-members stating that her hero, Kyoko Honda, who had gained a reputation for being a ruthless leader of 'Yankee' gang, was living nearby and had a daughter going to her school. Extremely excited, Arisa went looking for Kyoko's daughter and managed to bump into her during school, though she discovered that she was not the Yankee daughter she imagined, but a cheerful, joyful girl named Tohru Honda. Later, through Tohru, Arisa met Kyoko, though was furiously upset at seeing that her hero had matured and changed from a terrifying gang-leader to a warm, adorable, caring mother. Afterwards, Arisa frequently began bumping into Tohru and her mother and slowly began to change through speaking to them and staying at their house, little-by-little learning what was really most important in her life. Finally understanding, Arisa opted to leave her gang and announced her resignation as a member, though was fiercely beaten as 'punishment' by her fellow members. One gang member, however, only known as "Senpai", sympathized with Arisa and rushed to Kyoko's house before Arisa's beating, telling her that she could not save Arisa by herself and needed help, and that Arisa should have the life she wanted. Kyoko succeeded in saving Arisa, and ever since then Arisa became extremely close to the Honda family. Kyoko and Tohru continued to help Arisa emotionally, and otherwise. Arisa's father finally began working on leaving his alcoholism and soon became a responsible parent. The pair now lives in a unit with one bedroom and one living room. Both she and her father have jobs; his of unknown origins, hers at a coffee shop and convenience store. It is in this convenience store that she meets Kureno Sohma. As of Volume 13 Arisa has changed the places she works at, no longer wanting her hopes to rise and get shattered to pieces at the hope of seeing Kureno Sohma again, but realizing that it is not him. She claims she is tired of abusing herself, and that it was time to move on. Saki Hanajima When Saki was younger, the first discoveries of her power frightened her. A boy, one of her classmates, taunted her, called her a witch, and forced her to devour a live newt. In uncontrollable anger and outrage, Saki commanded the boy to die in her mind. With this thought, the boy suddenly collapsed unconscious onto the floor, nearly dead. (Later in the Manga, Saki's grandmother secretly tells her that the boy she 'nearly killed' recovered.) Realizing what she could do with her power, she became wary and terrified of herself. She knew that she had a great ability, but was horrified that she also had the power to harm people. From then on, she decided to remind herself of how dangerous she was. She began ignoring people and dressing in a gothic manner, not to frighten others for vanity, but to scare them away, and to remind herself of her threat. Before she came to Tohru and Arisa's school, she is seen sitting at a table surrounded by students, who are burning her arms with matches to try and make her angry enough to use her power. After the incident at her school, Saki and her parents decided to transfer her so that she would begin a new life at another school. There she met Tohru Honda and Arisa Uotani, who welcomed the 'new kid' with open arms. Unfortunately, one day another student heard a rumour about Saki's reputation at her previous school and questioned her about the boy she tried to kill in front of Tohru and Arisa. Saki, thinking of the word "kill" (with no real intention of hurting the student) from the student's question, caused her waves to accidentally strike the student's head. Horrified, Saki ran out of the room in tears and was followed immediately by her friends, later on a staircase she shouted at them, telling them "not to go near her" for her fear that she would hurt them. Arisa and Tohru spoke against Saki's wishes, stating that they would love her no matter what and did not care for her past and what powers she had. With these words Saki and Tohru cried with happiness and embraced in true friendship, the three now promising to be best friends regardless of what had happened in the past or would happen in the future. A little while after that, Saki managed to control her powers. She promised she wouldn't use her powers lightly, but did use them once for "punishment" referring to the time when Minami Kinoshita hit Tohru on her head (this is only in the manga). Arisa and Saki later vowed upon the grave of Tohru's mother, Kyoko Honda, that they would always be there to protect Tohru. Therefore, Hanajima always stands up for Tohru, and Arisa and Saki were later the first to 'inspect' Shigure Sohma's home when Tohru began living there to make sure she was comfortable and well-cared for. In the anime, this particular event was troublesome to the three cursed Sohmas living in the house. In spite of their caution, the three were continuously transformed and had to avoid being seen, lest Hatori Sohma would have to suppress Saki's, Arisa's, and (in the process) Tohru's memories. In the manga, they had no trouble whatsoever hiding their secret, despite Saki sometimes causing false alarms. (Such as pointing to Shigure, saying, "A dog", and revealing there was a dog behind Shigure. She also calls Yuki and Kyo "A cat and a mouse", because they fight like Tom and Jerry.) |
